Ans : Because his father believed that one must know one’s mother tongue before learning any other language.

Ans : When Bose brought his friend home from school, his mother welcomed and fed all of them with discrimination.
(c) Who was Lafont? How did he influence Bose ?
Ans : Lafont was a Jesuit Father. He played a significant role in developing Bose’s interest in natural science.
(d) Why did Bose refuse to accept his salary ?
Ans : At Presidency College Mr. Bose was offered a lower salary than his European colleagues. This hurt his sense of self respect and national pride. So, Bose refused to accept his salary as a sign of protest.

Ans : A sensitive instrument invented by Bose was the Crescograph. It is used to measure the growth rate of plants.
(b) What did Bose prove by his experiments on plants ?
Ans : By his experiments on plants Bose proved that plants behave in the same manner as human beings. They are sensitive to external stimuli also.
(c) Do you think Bose was uninterested in securing patency right ? Why ?
Ans : Yes, Bose was uninterested in securing patency right. He was uninterested because he wanted to allow others to advance further along the lines of his research.
(d) What were the various awards and honours conferred on Bose ?
Ans : Bose was awarded knighthood by the British in 1917. He was also conferred many other awards like ‘Fellow of the Royal society’, ‘Companion of the order of the Indian Empire’ etc.
(e) Name some of his books and publications.
Ans : Some of his books and publications are ‘Response in living and Non-living’ , (1902), ‘The Nervous Mechanism of plants’ (1926), ‘Major Mechanism of plants’ (1928), ‘Niruddesher khoje’ (1896) .

Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy
The great scientist Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy was born in 1861 at Khulna which is now in Bangladesh. His early education started at village pathsala. Then he went to Hare school and then to Albert school. He passed Entrance Examination in 1879. In 1882, he passed F.A from Metropoliton College. For his brilliant result, he won Gilchrist scholarship in 1882. Then he went to London. He did his B.Sc degree from Edinburgh University during the year 1882 to 1884 and did D.Sc from the same university. After returning Kolkata he became professor of Presidency College in 1889. In 1896 he made his great innovation. He prepared Mercurous Nitrite in laboratory. He established Bengal Chemicals in the year 1901. Later he joined Science College as Palit Professor. This great son of Bengal passed away in the year 1944.
