We had to hurry to fix the kite if we wanted to send it up before the wind fell. We rushed into the lighthouse to get some paper. We knew there was no more red paper. We took the first thing that came handy- an old letter lying on the bookcase in the sitting room. We patched the kite up with the letter, a sheet on each side and dried it by the fire. We started out, and up went the kite like a bird. The wind was glorious and soared. All at once-snap! And there was Claude, standing with a bit of cord in his hand, looking foolish. Our kite had sailed away over to the mainland.

I landed at Kumar post on Siachen Glacier on 2 April 2004. The post is located at an altitude of 7,000 metres. It was snowing and the temperature was minus 35 degrees celcius with heavy winds. When I reached the field station, three soldiers – Naik from Karnataka, Williams from West Bengal and Salim from Uttar Pradesh – shook hands with me. The warmth of their handshakes dispelled the chill of the place. It gave me the confidence that our nation is safe in the hands of the soldiers defending it in this difficult environment. Extraordinary leadership qualities are required to generate such confidence among troops in such difficult conditions.

[A jackal got a tiger’s skin – wore and threatened animals – all animals afraid – one night all jackals started to sing in chorus – that jackal also joined them – identity revealed – all animals drove him away.]

As a cultural secretary of your school write a notice for the school notice board for an excursion to Darjeeling. Tell the students to submit their names with the exact amount of fees per head along with the letter of consent from parents/guardian. Mention last date of submission, date, time and duration of the excursion, things to be taken in the journey. Get your notice countersigned your headmaster.
