The author and the text :
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables. She wrote numerous novels, poems and short stories. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1935.
লুসি মৌড মন্টগােমারি (১৮৭৪-১৯৪২) ছিলেন একজন কানাডীয় লেখিকা যিনি সবচেয়ে বেশি পরিচিত একগুচ্ছ উপন্যাসের জন্য, যার শুরু হয়েছিল ১৯০৮ সালে ‘অ্যান অভ গ্রীন গেবলস’ নামক উপন্যাস দিয়ে। তিনি প্রচুর প্রবন্ধ, কবিতা ও ছােটোগল্প লেখেন। ১৯৩৫ সালে ‘অফিসার অভ দ্য অর্ডার অভ দ্য ব্রিটিশ এম্পায়ার’ পদে তিনি অধিষ্ঠিত হন।
This short story is about a brother and a sister living on an isolated island with their father, who, through a series of incidents, get reunited with their long – lost relatives. It is a touching tale that underlines the value of relationships.
এই ছােটোগল্পটি এক ভাই ও বােনের গল্প যারা তাদের বাবার সাথে এক বিচ্ছিন্ন দ্বীপে বাস করত, যারা এক ঘটনাপ্রবাহের মধ্য দিয়ে তাদের দীর্ঘদিনের হারিয়ে যাওয়া আত্মীয়দের সাথে পুনর্মিলিত হয়। এটি একটি মর্মস্পর্শী গল্প যা আমাদের আত্মীয়তার সম্পর্কের মূল্য বােঝায়।
Read the following :
UNIT 1
Of course, there was nobody for us to play with on the Big Half Moon. We just had to make the most of each other, and we did.
এটা সত্যি, যে আমাদের সঙ্গে খেলার জন্য বিগ হাফ মুনে কেউই ছিল না। আমাদের একে অপরের সঙ্গে যতটা উপভোগ করা সম্ভব হত, ততটুকুই করতে বাধ্য হতাম।
We live on the Big Half Moon island. ‘We’ are Father and Claude and I and Aunt Esther and Mimi and Dick.
বিগ হাফ মুন আইল্যান্ডে আমরা থাকি। আমরা মানে বাবা, আমি, এস্থার পিসি, মিমি আর ডিক।
It used to be only Father and Claude and I.
আগে ছিলাম শুধু বাবা, ক্লড আর আমি।
It is all on account of the kite that there are more of us.
আমরা যে এখানে বেশিজন রয়েছি তা ওই ঘুড়িটির কারণে।
This is what I want to tell you about.
সেই কথাই আমি তােমাদের বলতে চাই।
Father is the keeper of the Big Half Moon lighthouse.
বাবা এই বিগ হাফ মুনের বাতিঘরের রক্ষী।
I am eleven years old. Claude is twelve.
আমার বয়স এগারে। ক্লডের বারাে।
In winter, when the harbour is frozen over, we all move over to the mainland.
শীতকালে যখন বন্দরটি বরফে ঢেকে যায়, আমরা সকলে মূল ভূখণ্ডে চলে যাই।
As soon as spring comes, back we sail to our own dear island.
বসন্ত আসামাত্রই আবার চলে আসি আমাদের নিজেদের প্রিয় দ্বীপে।
The funny part used to be that people always pitied us when the time came for us to return.
মজার ব্যাপার হত যখন আমাদের ফেরার সময় লােকেরা সবসময় সমবেদনা জানাত।
They said we must be so lonesome over there, with no other children near us.
তারা বলত এখানে আমরা কত একা, আমাদের কাছাকাছি আর কোনাে বাচ্চা নেই।
Of course Claude and I would have liked to have someone to play with us.
অবশ্য আমি আর ক্লড কাউকে খেলার সঙ্গী হিসেবে পেতে চাইতাম।
It is hard to run pirate caves and things like that with only two.
শুধু দুজনে মিলে পাইরেট কেভস বা ওই ধরনের খেলা করা খুবই কঠিন।
But we used to quarrel a good deal with the mainland children in winter.
কিন্তু আমরা শীতকালে মূল ভূখণ্ডের বাচ্চাদের সঙ্গে খুব ঝগড়া করতাম।
So it was perhaps just as well that there were none of them on the Big Half Moon. Claude and I never quarrelled.
তাই বােধহয় ভালই ছিল যে তারা কেউই বিগ হাফ মুনে থাকত না। ক্লড আর আমি কখনােই ঝগড়া করতাম না।
To be sure, Father didn’t seem to have any relations except us.
এটা সত্যি যে বাবার আমরা ছাড়া আর কোনাে আত্মীয়স্বজন ছিল না।
This used to puzzle Claude and me. Everybody on the mainland had relations. Why hadn’t we ? Was it because we lived on an island ?
এটা আমাকে আর ক্লডকে বিস্মিত করত। মূল ভূখণ্ডে সকলেরই আত্মীয় ছিল। আমাদের কেন নয় ? কেন কী আমরা দ্বীপে থাকি বলে ?
We thought it would be so jolly to have an uncle and aunt and some cousins.
আমরা ভাবতাম একজন কাকা আর পিসি আর কিছু ভাইবােন থাকলে কত মজা হত।
Once we asked Father about it, but he looked so sorrowful that we wished we hadn’t.
একবার বাবাকে এই প্রশ্ন করাতে তাঁকে এত দুঃখী দেখাল যে জিজ্ঞেস না করলেই যেন ভালাে হত।
He said it was all his fault. Claude and I didn’t understand what he meant.
তিনি বললেন, সবই তার দোষ। ক্লড আর আমি বুঝতে পারলাম না তিনি কী বােঝাতে চাইছেন।

বিগ হাফ মুনে গ্রীষ্মকাল সবসময়ই সুন্দর।
When it is fine, the harbour is blue and calm, with little wind and ripples.
আবহাওয়া ভালো বন্দরটি নীল ও শান্ত থাকে, মৃদু বাতাস আর ছােটো ছােটো ঢেউ প্রায় থাকেই না।
Every summer, we had some hobby. The last summer before Dick and Mimi came, we were crazy about kites.
প্রতি গ্রীষ্মেই আমাদের কিছু শখ হত। গত গ্রীষ্মে ডিক আর মিমি আসার আগে আমরা ঘুড়ি নিয়ে মেতে উঠলাম।
A boy on the mainland showed Claude how to make them. Back on the island we made plenty of kites.
মূল ভূখন্ডের একটি ছেলে ক্লডকে ঘুড়ি বানাতে শিখিয়েছিল। দ্বীপে ফিরে আমরা অনেক ঘুড়ি বানিয়েছিলাম।
Claude would go around to the other side of the island and we would play shipwrecked mariners signalling to each other with kites.
ক্লড দ্বীপের অন্য দিকে যেত আর আমরা ঘুড়ি দিয়ে জাহাজডুবি হওয়া নাবিকদের মতাে একে অপরকে সংকেত জানানোর খেলা খেলতাম।
We had a kite that was big and covered with lovely red paper.
আমাদের একটা ঘুড়ি ছিল যেটা খুবই বড়াে আর সুন্দর লাল কাগজে মােড়া।
We pasted gold tinsel stars all over it and had written our names full on it – Claude Leete and Philippa Leete, Big Half Moon lighthouse.
এটির সারা গায়ে আমরা সােনালি তারার আকৃতির চুমকি সেঁটে দিয়েছিলাম এবং আমাদের পুরাে নাম—ক্লড লিট এবং ফিলিপ্পা লিট, বিগ হাফ মুন বাতিঘর লেখা ছিল এর ওপরে।
One day there was a grand wind for kite – flying.
একদিন ঘুড়ি ওড়ানাের উপযােগী চমৎকার হাওয়া বইছিল।
I’m not sure how it happened, but as I was bringing the kite from the house, I tripped and fell over the rocks.
আমি ঠিক বুঝতে পারলাম না কী করে এটা ঘটল, কিন্তু বাড়ি থেকে ঘুড়িটা নিয়ে আসার সময় আমি হোঁচট খেয়ে পাথরের ওপর পড়ে গেলাম।
My elbow went clear through the kite, making a big hole.
আমার কনুইটা ঘুড়ির মধ্যে ঢুকে একটা বড়ােসড়াে ফুটো তৈরি করল।
We had to hurry to fix the kite if we wanted to send it up before the wind fell.
আমাদের খুব তাড়া ছিল ঘুড়িটা ঠিক করার যাতে আমরা বাতাস কমে যাওয়ার আগে ঘুড়িটা ওড়াতে পারি।
We rushed into the lighthouse to get some paper. We knew there was no more red paper.
আমরা দৌড়ে বাতিঘরের ভিতরে গেলাম কাগজ আনতে। আমরা জানতাম ওখানে আর কোনাে লাল কাগজ নেই।
We took the first thing that came handy – an old letter lying on the bookcase in the sitting room.
আমরা হাতের কাছে প্রথম যা পেলাম তাই নিলাম—বসার ঘরে বইয়ের তাকে পড়ে থাকা একটা পুরােনাে চিঠি।
We patched the kite up with the letter, a sheet on each side and dried it by the fire.
আমরা চিঠিটা দিয়ে ঘুড়ির দুদিকে তালি লাগানাের জন্য দুটো কাগজ সাঁটালাম আর আগুনে শুকিয়ে নিলাম।
We started out, and and up went the kite like a bird. The wind was glorious and it soared.
আমরা শুরু করে দিলাম, আর ঘুড়িটা পাখির মতাে উপরে উঠে গেল। চমৎকার বাতাস বইছিল আর এটা অনেক উঁচুতে ভাসছিল।
All at once – snap ! And there was Claude, standing with a bit of cord in his hand, looking foolish. Our kite had sailed away over to the mainland.
হঠাৎ পটাং! আর ক্লড বােকার মতাে এক টুকরাে সুতাে হাতে দাঁড়িয়ে আর আমাদের ঘুড়িটা ভেসে চলে গেল মূল ভূখণ্ডের দিকে।

A month later a letter came for Father. After he finished reading it, his eyes looked as if he had been crying.
এক মাস বাদে বাবার কাছে একটা চিঠি এল। যখন তিনি চিঠিটা পড়া শেষ করলেন, তার চোখ দেখে মনে হচ্ছিল তিনি যেন কাদছিলেন।
“Do you want to know what became of your kite ?” he said. Then he sat down beside us and told us the whole story.
“তােমরা কি জানতে চাও তােমাদের ঘড়ির কী হয়েছে?” তিনি জিজ্ঞেস করলেন। তখন তিনি আমাদের পাশে বসলেন আর পুরাে গল্পটা আমাদের বললেন।
Father had a brother and a sister. He had quarrelled with his brother and left home.
বাবার এক ভাই আর এক বােন ছিল। তিনি তার ভাইয়ের সঙ্গে ঝগড়া করে বাড়ি ছেড়ে চলে গিয়েছিলেন।
Years afterward, he felt sorry and when he went back, he found his brother had died and he couldn’t find his sister.
বহুবছর বাদে, যখন তিনি দুঃখিত হয়ে বাড়ি ফিরে আসেন, তিনি দেখেন তার ভাই আগেই মারা গেছেন আর বােনকেও তিনি খুঁজে পাননি।
The letter father had just received was from his sister, Aunt Esther, mother of Dick and Mimi.

She was a widow who lived hundreds of miles inland.
তিনি ছিলেন একজন বিধবা মহিলা যিনি শত শত মাইল দূরে মূল ভূখণ্ডের ভেতরে বাস করতেন।
One day when Dick and Mimi were out in the woods, they discovered the kite on the top of a tree and carried it home.
একদিন যখন ডিক আর মিমি বনের মধ্যে গিয়েছিল, তারা এই ঘুড়িটাকে গাছের ওপর দেখতে পায় এবং সেটিকে বাড়িতে নিয়ে আসে।
When their mother saw the kite patched with the letter, she turned pale.
যখন তাদের মা ঘুড়িটির গায়ে তাপ্পি লাগানাে চিঠিটি দেখতে পান, তিনি ফ্যাকাশে হয়ে যান।
It was the very letter she had once written to her brother.
এটা ছিল সেই চিঠিটি যেটা তিনি একসময় তার ভাইকে লিখেছিলেন।
Philippa was her mother’s name and Claude was her father’s. She knew who we must be.
ফিলিপ্লা ছিল তার মায়ের নাম আর ক্লড তার বাবার নাম। তিনি বুঝতে পারেন আমরা কে হতে পারি।
So she sat down and wrote to Big Half Moon and Father received her letter.
তাই তিনি বসে বিগ্ হাফ মুনে চিঠি লেখেন এবং বাবা সেই চিঠিটি পেয়েছেন।
Next day, Father went and brought Aunt Esther and Dick and Mimi with him.
পরের দিন, বাবা গিয়ে এস্থার পিসি, ডিক আর মিমিকে সঙ্গে করে নিয়ে আসেন।
They have been here ever since. Aunt Esther is a dear and Dick and Mimi are too jolly for words.
তারপর থেকে ওরা এখানেই থাকে। এস্থার পিসি খুব ভালো আর ডিক আর মিমি কতটা হাসিখুশি তা ভাষায় বােঝানাে যাবে না।
But the best of it all is that we have relations now !
আর সব থেকে দারুণ ব্যাপার হল এখন আমাদেরও আত্মীয়স্বজন আছে।

The Clever Crow and the Fox
One day a crow found a piece of meat. It sat on the branch of a tree. The piece of meat was in its beak. At that time a fox was passing under the tree. The fox noticed the piece of meat in the crow’s beak. The fox was really greedy. He wanted to get the piece. So the sly fox requested the crow to sing a song. The fox expected that as the crow would start singing the piece of meat would fall from its beak. But the crow had enough wit. It understood the fox’s cunning. So keeping the meat under its feet, the crow started to sing. The crow was able to fool the fox successfully. Disheartened, the fox departed.
