It was 1.35 am. The night was moonlit.Subhas and Sisir hugged the inner wall of the long house-corridor and tiptoed down the back stairs to the car. Subhas sat in the back, Sisir drove the car. He started the engine and drove out from 38/2, Elgin Road as he had done on so many past occasions. At Subhas’s Elgin Road residence. the light glowed in his bedroom to give the impression that he was still there. As Calcutta slept, uncle and nephew crossed Howrah Bridge and went beyond the city’s precincts. Subhas poured Sisir coffee from a thermos. They shared a few anxious moments together when the ear engine faltered once. It started again and Sisir dashed at high speed through the dark night.

THE SOLDIER AND THE CAGED BIRDS
Once upon a time, a war started between England and France. In the war many English soldiers were imprisoned. After many days, one of the soldiers was released and he returned home. One day he was going to the market. Then he saw a bird-seller carrying a few cages, full of birds. Seeing the condition of the poor birds, the soldier took pity on them. Then he remembered his own condition in the French prison. The soldier bought all the cages and set the birds free. The bird-seller said to the soldier, “Why did you release the birds?” The soldier said, “I was once captivated.
So, I know the miseries of the captivity”
