(Lesson 7, A King’s Tale)
It was Christmas time, a time of festivity. But all around Britain, people were hungry, cold and frightened. One day, in a churchyard, people found a large stone on which was fixed a magnificent sword. Upon the stone, in gold letters, was inscribed “whoever pulls out this sword is by right of birth the king of England”.
Immediately, the eager barons who longed to become the king, jostled among themselves to lift the sword. None succeeded. The sword remained fixed to the stone. It was Arthur, at the age of eighteen, who succeeded in lifting the sword for the first time. The barons were angry and disappointed. They demanded a test.

2. Read the following passage and then answer the questions that follow:
Cold drinks have no nutritional value. They contain sugar, chemical preservatives, edible colour and quite a lot of unknown ingredients and finally, highly pressurized carbon dioxide. These ingredients are not good for our health. They are also harmful for diabetic patients.
Because of higher acid content cold drinks damage the thin membranes in the stomach and the small intestine and so enzymes that help digestion cannot function properly. The acidity is damaging to teeth and bones. Cold drinks are also bad for the human body because these are drunk at extremely low temperature, much lower than the normal body temperature of 37°C. These may cause serious respiratory troubles which, if unattended may lead to
cardiac failure.
